- The National Science Foundation ranks our Physics Dept. 59th in the U.S.
- Our researchers have projects funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Occupational Health and Safety.
- Total research and development expenditures totaled $63.1 million in Fiscal Year 2013, up from $36 million in 2007.
- The University of Massachusetts ranks 13th in the U.S. for intellectual property generated.
- The Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center supports research on applications of nanotechnology.
- Our researchers developed biodegradable nanospheres that allow drugs to be absorbed directly through the skin.
Other highlights
Athletics at UMass LowellWhether you want to hit the field or cheer from the sidelines, UMass Lowell has it all when it comes to sports. UMass Lowell announced on February 14, 2013 that it would be moving to Division I in all sports and joining the America East Conference. The River Hawks began competing in 14 sports in Division I in the 2013-14 academic year, and 18 in 2014-2015, but will not be eligible for postseason play while it completes the four-year NCAA reclassification from Division II to Division I. The River Hawks will be full Division I members of America East in 2017-18.

Here are just a few highlights from our exciting intramural program:
- Our NCAA Division I hockey team will continue to play in the Hockey East Association competing with national powerhouse programs like Boston College, Boston University and University of New Hampshire
- The River Hawks have won 15 NCAA Championships in school history
- UMass Lowell won its second consecutive Hockey East tournament championship in March 2014. River Hawk goalie Connor Hellebuyck became the only player to earn the tournament MVP honor twice, capturing it in both 2013 and 2014.
- In April 2013, UMass Lowell’s men’s ice hockey team reached the NCAA Division I Championship, the Frozen Four, for the first time in university history.
- Our men's cross country team has been the NCAA East Regional Champion 9 of the last 11 years
- Most recently, our field hockey team won their second NCAA DII National Championship
- UMass Lowell ranks No. 12 in the NCAA for annual hockey attendance and averages more than 5,000 fans per game.
- made 104 NCAA post-season appearances,
- won two team national championships,
- had two individual national championships,
- had a pair of national players of the year and one Olympian,
- won 59 conference championships,
- had 214 All-Americans and 32 Academic All-Americans.
